About

Valeriy (Val) Shubinets was born in Ukraine.  At the age of 13, he immigrated to the U.S. with his parents.  They settled in Chicago, where they eventually became U.S. citizens and Val attended Lake View High School.  Val completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago and earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School.  At Harvard, Val was selected to the Health, Science and Technology (HST) program, geared towards developing physician-scientists.  As part of HST, Val attended additional classes at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and spent an extra year in a research laboratory.  Val then completed a 6-year residency program in plastic surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and then his orthopaedic hand fellowship at The Curtis National Hand Center/Union Memorial Hospital.

Val has a diverse clinical practice and cares for all hand, wrist, and forearm problems, with particular expertise in reconstruction and microsurgery.  His academic interests include understanding vascular anatomy, designing novel free tissue reconstruction options, and using novel biomedical approaches to optimize reconstructive surgery.
